Surin National Museum

Surin National Museum serves as a center for learning about the history and culture of Surin Province. It was established in 1974 (B.E. 2517) through the initiative of Mr. Suthee Oboam, the then-governor of Surin, beginning with the collection of antiquities and art objects donated by local residents.

History

Initially, the museum was located at the Surin Provincial Hall. It was later moved to the Surin Provincial Education Office due to the continuous increase in antiquities and art objects, which made the original space insufficient. In 1992 (B.E. 2535), the Fine Arts Department implemented a policy to establish national museums in cities across the country, and Surin National Museum was selected as one of the model museums.

Exhibitions

The museums exhibitions are divided into five main sections, as follows:

1. Natural History: Presents information about Surin Provinces geography, climate, and natural resources.

2. Archaeological History: Showcases the development of human societies from prehistoric times through various cultural periods.

3. Urban History: Tells the story of the founding and development of Surin City.

4. Ethnology: Highlights the lifestyles of ethnic groups in the area, such as the Kuy, Khmer, Lao, and Khorat Thai communities.

5. Outstanding Heritage: Exhibits local handicrafts and cultural traditions, including silk weaving, silver jewelry making, folk performances, and elephant raising.

Architecture and Facilities

The museum building is designed with inspiration from Khmer stone temple architecture, featuring a complex of interconnected structures. It is divided into four sections as follows:

  • Entrance Hall and Walkways
  • Education Services and Administrative Offices
  • Permanent Exhibition Building
  • Museum Storage

All of these features create a distinctive and well-known identity for the museum. Inside, there is also a reconstructed display of a traditional elephant-raising village.

The museum is open Wednesday to Sunday (closed on Monday, Tuesday, and public holidays)

from 09:00 AM to 04:00 PM.
