Rattan Weaving: A Handicraft Passed Down Through Generations

Products from Ban Butom are highly natural, as no coatings or lacquers are used. If they become dull or develop mold, they can be cleaned safely using natural sour fruits such as starfruit, lime, or kaffir lime, and then left to dry in the sun, which restores the rattans shine safely.

1. Rattan Weaving Craft

Ban Butom is famous for its rattan weaving handicrafts, particularly baskets and various containers made from fine rat tail rattan strands. This craft began around 1930 (B.E. 2473) when villagers learned the techniques from Surin Provincial Prison and later developed it into a family-run industry that has generated income for the community.

2. Product Care and Maintenance

Rattan products from Ban Butom are usually left unvarnished to preserve their natural look. If they develop mold or become dull, they can be cleaned using sour fruits such as ripe starfruit, lime, or kaffir lime, then rinsed with water and dried in the sun to restore their original shine.

3. Variety of Products

Ban Butoms rattan products come in a wide variety, including rattan baskets, trays, stacking containers, and tissue boxes. Prices start from 150 baht and vary depending on size and craftsmanship.

4. Yok Thong Weaving

In addition to rattan weaving, Ban Butom is also renowned for Yok Thong silk weaving, led by the Chansoma group. This group has received national recognition and was once selected to create textiles for leaders at the APEC meeting in 2003 (B.E. 2546).
