The only lowland two-needle pine forest in Surin
Located in Thapthan Subdistrict, Sangkha District, Surin Province, Nong Khu Pine Forest Park is one of Thailands most remarkable and rare natural attractions. Its uniqueness comes from the presence of two-needle pine trees growing on flat terrain, whereas this type of pine is normally found only in high mountainous areas.
This makes the site an important natural study area and a perfect destination for those who truly appreciate peace and nature.
History
Originally, this area was part of the Huai Kamphot Left Bank National Reserved Forest. It later gained attention from forestry scholars due to its unique characteristic as a lowland two-needle pine forest, a rarity in Thailand. As a result, it was designated as a forest park in 1981 (B.E. 2524) and officially declared a Forest Park in 2020 (B.E. 2563) to support long-term conservation and natural studies.
Natural Characteristics
This forest park covers an area of approximately 6,250 rai and is filled with tall, orderly rows of two-needle pine trees. The atmosphere is shady and pleasantly cool throughout the year. During the rainy and winter seasons, a light mist often blankets the treetops, creating a feeling reminiscent of being in a northern Thai forest.
Flora and Fauna
In addition to the two-needle pine, the area is home to various local tree species such as Teng, Rang, and Hiang. Wildlife commonly found here includes squirrels, Asian koels, various species of butterflies, and other small animals typical of the region.

Transportation
From Surin City, take Highway 2077 (SurinSangkha) for approximately 35 kilometers. You can travel by private car or by SurinSangkha bus, which stops near the forest park.
