Ubon Ratchathani Province
Pha Taem National Park is one of the most significant natural and archaeological attractions in Northeastern Thailand. Covering an area of approximately 340 square kilometers, the park spans across Khong Chiam, Si Mueang Mai, and Pho Sai districts in Ubon Ratchathani Province. Recognized as Thailand’s 74th national park, it is renowned for its dramatic sandstone cliffs overlooking the Mekong River, prehistoric rock paintings dating back 3,000–4,000 years, and one of the country's most iconic sunrise viewpoints, where visitors can witness the first rays of sunlight reaching Thailand each morning.
History of Pha Taem National Park
The Pha Taem area is recognized as one of Thailand’s most important archaeological sites. It gained national attention following the discovery of prehistoric rock paintings by an archaeological survey team from Silpakorn University. These remarkable artworks revealed the historical significance of the area and eventually contributed to its designation as a national park.
The ancient paintings provide valuable insights into the lives of early communities that once inhabited the Mekong River basin. Depicting scenes of daily activities, spiritual beliefs, fishing practices, and social traditions, the artworks serve as a fascinating record of prehistoric human civilization and its close relationship with the natural environment.
