Thai Crane, Buriram Province

Thai Crane

Thailands protected wildlife under the Wildlife Preservation and Protection Act B.E. 2562 (2019) was once extinct in the wild in Thailand, surviving only in zoos. Currently, approximately 175 individuals have been reintroduced into the wild.

Wetlands refer to low-lying areas that are marshy, swampy, or naturally waterlogged. A wetland is an area that is regularly or temporarily flooded or saturated with water, whether freshwater, brackish, or saltwater. This definition also includes coastal areas and parts of the sea with depths not exceeding 6 meters.

Guidelines for When You Encounter a Thai Crane

  • Do not harm the bird, make loud noises, or do anything that may startle it.
  • Do not feed the bird, as it must find its own food.
  • Maintain a safe viewing distance of more than 100 meters.
  • If the bird starts to flee, stop approaching.
  • If the bird approaches you, step aside and give it space.

Release Procedure

Reintroduction of Thai Cranes into the Wild

1. Selection of Release Sites

Wetlands are important natural habitats for Thai cranes. When selecting release sites, several influential factors must be considered, such as types of vegetation, aquatic animals, and, importantly, disturbances and threats from human activities.

2. Breeding and Propagation

Nakhon Ratchasima Zoo is the worlds largest breeding center for Thai cranes. Each year, the chicks born are carefully selected to enter the release program for reintroduction into the wild.

3. Chick Rearing

(Using Parent-Replica Suits)

Zoo staff at Nakhon Ratchasima must wear suits that mimic parent Thai cranes to train the chicks to live naturally and prevent imprinting on humans. Chicks must undergo this training for at least six months before being released into the wild.

4. Health Check and Tracking Device Attachment

Thai cranes being reintroduced into the wild must undergo a health check and be marked with leg bands, implanted with microchips, and fitted with tracking devices for monitoring.

5. Training the Birds in the Release Area and Reintroduction into the Wild

Before release, Thai cranes must be transferred to acclimation enclosures in the release area. This allows the birds to become familiar with and adapt to the local environment before their readiness is assessed and they are reintroduced into the wild.

6. Post-Release Monitoring

After the Thai cranes are released into the wild, the field teams from the Zoological Park Organization of Thailand and the Department of National Parks are responsible for monitoring and evaluating their survival and impacts. They also promote conservation awareness among local communities.
