Chang Pi Castle
It is one of the important historical sites of Surin Province, located in Ban Chang Pi. The castle serves as significant evidence of the influence of ancient Khmer culture, which once spread into northeastern Thailand, particularly during the 16th - 17th Buddhist centuries.

History and Background
This castle is called Chang Pi, named after the nearby village. According to local accounts, it is believed that the site may have once been home to skilled craftsmen who made traditional flutes or other local musical instruments.
Chang Pi Castle is approximately 1,000 years old and is believed to have been built around the 16th - 17th Buddhist centuries, during the height of the Khmer Empire. It was constructed as a Hindu religious site of the Shaivism sect, which venerates Shiva (Phra Isuan) as the supreme deity.
Chang Pi Castle consists of three main structures,
aligned in a northsouth orientation and facing east, following the typical layout of Hindu religious sites.

1. Main Sanctuary (Central Structure)
Built from laterite, the outer walls of the main sanctuary still feature carved floral and vine patterns. The base of the temple is elevated above the ground with a staircase leading up to the front.
2. Secondary Sanctuaries (Side Structures)
Smaller than the main sanctuary, these side structures share a similar design but typically feature minimal decorative carvings. They are believed to have been used to house sacred images or store religious offerings.
3. Gateways and Walkways
At the front, there is a main gateway (gopura) with a short walkway leading to the sanctuaries.

Historical and Cultural Significance
Chang Pi Castle is one of Surins important cultural heritage sites, reflecting the historical cultural and religious connections between local communities and the great Khmer Empire. It also serves as a valuable archaeological learning site, particularly showcasing ancient design and construction techniques.

Conservation and Tourism
Today, Chang Pi Castle is maintained by the Fine Arts Department and is open to the public. The surrounding area has been landscaped to support tourism and cultural learning. Visitors can explore the castle along with other archaeological sites in the district, such as Ban Phluang Castle and Ban Phrai Castle.
