Surin Province, besides being the land of elephants, also hosts beautiful traditions that reflect deep Buddhist faith and local culture. One of the most distinctive events is the Buddhist Lent Candle Procession and Alms Giving on Elephant Back, held annually during the Buddhist Lent Festival. This event is unique and remarkable, unlike any other.
History and Significance of the Festival
The Buddhist Lent Candle Procession is held to offer candles to monks during the Buddhist Lent, an act of merit-making in accordance with Buddhist beliefs. In Surin Province, this tradition has been enhanced and distinguished by integrating local culture with the preservation of Thai elephants, creating a unique and culturally rich celebration.

Candle Procession from Various Temples
The Buddhist Lent candles are intricately carved and paraded along with traditional dances performed by villagers dressed in their local ethnic costumes, such as Khmer, Kui, and Lao.
Alms Giving Ceremony on Elephant Back
More than 50 elephants are beautifully decorated, with monks seated on their backs to receive alms from devotees. This ceremony is extremely rare and unique, unlike anything else in the world.

Additional Activities
The festival also features cultural performances, OTOP product booths, and educational exhibitions about elephants and Buddhism, offering visitors a rich and immersive cultural experience.
