History
Burapharam Temple is believed to have been established during the Thonburi period or the early Rattanakosin era by Phraya Surintharapakdi Srinarong Changwang (Pum), the first governor of Surin, together with local villagers, between 1757 and 1790. The temple was originally called Wat Burap.
"Luang Pho Phra Chee" or
"Luang Pho Prajee"
It is a Buddha image in the Maravichai posture, with a width of 4 sok (approximately 8 feet), made of compressed terracotta. The statue reflects the artistic style of the Kuy (So) people or the Lao-Lan Chang tradition. Although there are no records of its exact creation date, it is believed to have been made around the same time as the temple. The image is enshrined in a four-sided mandapa completed in 1963 and was renovated in 1995.
The Main Ordination Hall (Ubosot)
The large ordination hall (Ubosot) of Burapharam Temple in Surin Province is an architecturally significant and beautiful structure. Construction began in 1936 and was completed in 1950. The hall measures 15 meters in width and 32 meters in length. Inside, the principal Buddha image resembles Phra Chinnarat and is enshrined on a two-tiered pedestal, flanked by the left and right chief disciples on the lower tier.
The pediment of the Ubosot features intricate designs, with a Buddha image at the top, followed by six-armed celestial beings. The hall has two entrance doors, and the surrounding outer walls (Kaeo walls) showcase Khmer-style art, decorated with short Naga staircases. The circumambulatory walkway around the hall is spacious.
Inside, the walls are adorned with exquisite murals depicting the life of the Buddha. The Ubosot also formerly housed sacred relics, including the Buddhas relics, arahant relics, and the ashes of revered monks such as Luang Pu Sao and Luang Pu Mun, which have now been relocated to the Kamatan Museum within the temple grounds.
Luang Pu Dul Atulo
Luang Pu Dul Atulo was a meditation master in the Kammatthana tradition. He resided at Burapharam Temple from 1934 until his passing in 1983. Revered as the Father of Mindfulness Meditation, he taught many notable disciples, including Luang Pu Fan Acharo and Luang Pu On Yanasi.
Within the temple, the Kammatthana and Relics Museum was established to honor Luang Pu Dul Atulo. The museum displays his likeness and preserves his personal belongings, allowing visitors to pay respects and learn about his life and teachings.
